Different Grades of Essential Oils and Their Uses

Essential oils have been used for centuries for a variety of purposes, from health and wellness to beauty and cleaning. However, not all essential oils are created equal. Understanding the different grades of essential oils and their uses can help you make informed decisions when purchasing and using essential oils.

Essential oils can be classified into three main grades: therapeutic grade, food grade, and perfume grade. Each grade is determined by the purity and quality of the oil, as well as its intended use.

Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils

Therapeutic grade essential oils are the purest and highest quality oils available on the market aka pure essential oils they are the same thing. Although, please do understand that although therapeutic grade essential oil can also mean blended or diluted essential oils. To make things clearer, let's say you buy a 100% pure essential lavender oil, now that is considered therapeutic grade. And now you dilute that essential oil with 90% carrier oil (Coconut oil or whatever you choose) that is still considered therapeutic grade. Therapeutic grade refers to the essential oil used in the concoction. So yes therapeutic grade and pure essential oils can be used interchangeably but you have to understand its definitions properly.

These oils are intended for therapeutic use, such as in aromatherapy, massage, or topical application. Therapeutic grade oils are highly concentrated and should always be diluted before use. They are also more expensive than other grades of essential oils.
To be classified as therapeutic grade, essential oils must meet certain criteria. Firstly, they must be 100% pure and natural, without any synthetic additives or contaminants. Secondly, they must be sourced from plants that are grown without the use of harmful pesticides or chemicals, and that are harvested at the optimal time for maximum potency.

Some common therapeutic grade essential oils and their benefits include:

  • Lavender essential oil: Calming, soothing, and promotes relaxation and sleep

  • Peppermint essential oil: Invigorating, helps with digestion and nausea, and can relieve tension headaches

  • Tea tree essential oil: Antimicrobial, can help with acne and other skin issues

  • Eucalyptus essential oil: Promotes respiratory health and can help with colds and congestion

Food Grade Essential Oils

Food grade essential oils are safe for consumption and can be used in cooking, baking, and other culinary applications. These oils are typically extracted using cold pressing methods, and are free from synthetic additives and contaminants. The main difference between food grade essential oils is that after extraction, food grade essential oils may have additional synthetic additives like carrier oils or even pesticides during the farming of the plants.
Food grade essential oils are essential oils that are safe to ingest and can be used for culinary purposes. They are derived from a variety of plant sources, including herbs, spices, fruits, and vegetables, and are often used to enhance the flavor and aroma of food and drinks.

When using food grade essential oils, it is important to remember that they are highly concentrated and potent. Therefore, they should always be used sparingly and in small amounts. A few drops are usually all that is needed to add flavor and aroma to your recipes.
One of the most common uses for food grade essential oils is in baking. They can be used to flavor cakes, cookies, and other baked goods. For example, peppermint essential oil can be added to brownie batter for a delicious peppermint brownie, or lemon essential oil can be used in a lemon pound cake recipe.

Food grade essential oils can also be used in cooking. They are great for adding flavor to sauces, marinades, and dressings. For example, a drop of oregano essential oil can be added to tomato sauce for a more authentic Italian flavor, or a drop of basil essential oil can be added to olive oil and vinegar for a delicious salad dressing.

In addition to their flavor and aroma, food grade essential oils also offer health benefits. Many essential oils have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties that can support overall health and wellness. For example, oregano essential oil has been shown to have antimicrobial properties that can help fight off harmful bacteria and viruses in the body.

Perfume Grade Essential Oils

Perfume grade essential oils are typically the lowest quality oils available on the market. They are often made using synthetic fragrances and additives, and may contain fillers and contaminants.

Perfume grade oils are intended for use in perfumes, colognes, and other cosmetic applications. They are not intended for therapeutic or food use, and should not be applied topically or ingested although you can use it in a diffuser for therapeutic purposes
One of the most important factors in creating high-quality perfume grade essential oils is the source of the plant material.

The plants used to make these oils must be of the highest quality, grown in the best conditions, and harvested at the optimal time. This is because the scent and composition of the essential oil is heavily influenced by these factors.
The extraction process used for perfume grade essential oils is also crucial. The goal is to produce an oil that is as true to the plant's natural scent as possible. This is achieved by using the most gentle and efficient extraction methods, such as steam distillation or CO2 extraction, that preserve the plant's natural chemical composition and aroma.

Perfume grade essential oils can be used in a variety of ways in the fragrance industry. They can be used as single-note fragrances or as part of a larger scent blend. They can be used to create a range of different fragrances, from fresh and floral scents to woody and earthy scents.

In addition to their use in the perfume industry, perfume grade essential oils also have a range of therapeutic benefits. Many essential oils have been shown to have mood-enhancing properties, and can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. They can also be used to promote relaxation, improve sleep, and boost overall emotional well-being.
